It’s an honor and a pleasure to share with you my poem, “Pileated Woodpecker,” which appears in the gorgeous summer 2023 issue of Crab Creek Review! Thank you editors David J. Daniel’s and Julia Hands for selecting my work.

Marvelous! Spying pileated woodpeckers — or evidence, in the form of great piles of wood chips at the base of dying trees — was a real treat when I lived in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. They are so, so … prehistoric, and so beautifully outlandish, as you well capture in this poem. Nicely done!

Yes! Encountering these gorgeous living dinosaurs is always such a thrill! Whenever one of us sees one in the yard, we call out SKY CHICKEN! and the others come running!

I love the brotherhood of all beings you claim here and the elevated status you give this dear woodpecker, so like a chicken, who yet offers you more of yourself when you give him the honour of “precede and surpass” – great ending!

Thanks, Lynne! Yes, I do know a thing or two about insinuating myself right into that Life Force which transcends my own…

This is wonderful, Stephanie. Congratulations.
I see them more often while kayaking than in our yard. Each sighting is a delight. Love Matthews’ photo. A rocking kayak seldom offers such a sharp photo, especially with a zoom.

Thanks, Ken! I think Matt captured this shot with his phone through the sliding glass door.

If I’m ever lucky enough to see one of these in person (they are supposedly nearby, on the other side of town) I will overjoyed to see its Komodo-dragon nature and tyrannosaurus eyes for myself!
